To help maintains its numbers, VIGIL self-manufactured cybernetic units consistently. It also utilized “synthesis chambers” to repopulate quickly, such as after a battle. Synthesizing is the process of converting a human into a cybernetic organism, or Cyborg. This process is quick and brutal, involving the removal of limbs and replacement by mechanical facsimiles. The subject’s mind is stripped bare, and memory replaced by programming. As a result, synthesis became the ultimate punishment threatened by the Clergy for insolence.
The utilization of Cyborgs was banned by most Martian nations at the beginning of the 22nd Century. A contingent of Cyborgs was launched on an expedition beyond the solar system, built to withstand the time and rigors of deep space travel. Less than ten years into their 100-year mission, they returned. Equipped with scientific knowledge and electronic upgrades from an unknown source, they claimed to be liberating themselves from their human "masters." They were eventually stopped by a combination of human soldiers and droid infantry, and were immediately banned from use and practice. It wasn't until VIGIL assumed command of the planet that it and its Clergy reinstated the Cyborg program, and soon utilized them as their primary fighting force.
